In the summer of 2017, a tragedy unfolded within a Phoenix, Arizona home, forever altering the lives of the Estrada family. On July 14th, 15-year-old Reyna Estrada, a female described as a vibrant and happy teenager, was fatally shot. Her life was cut short in her own bedroom, a place that should have been her sanctuary. Known for her love of the Boston Red Sox and Washington Redskins, as well as her contagious laughter, Reyna's sudden and violent death left a void in the hearts of those who
knew her.
The initial call to the police was for a person with a gun at the family residence near Interstate 17 and Buckeye Road. When officers arrived, they discovered a tense and volatile scene. They found Reyna's 18-year-old brother, Ignacio Estrada, armed and being restrained by his father. After securing the weapon and taking Ignacio into custody, they found Reyna deceased in her room from a gunshot wound.
Subsequent investigations and court documents revealed a disturbing motive behind the tragic event. Ignacio Estrada admitted to a year-long plan to murder his entire family. He confessed that his anger stemmed from a $20,000 loan he had given his parents. According to his statement, he had considered tying up Reyna but ultimately decided to shoot her to prevent her from calling for help after he had killed the rest of their family.
The events of that fateful day escalated when Ignacio's father returned home from work. Ignacio confronted him, demanding his wallet and debit card before attempting to shoot him. The gun failed to fire, and a physical struggle ensued between father and son. The arrival of Reyna's mother, who promptly called 911 upon seeing the altercation and the weapon, likely prevented further bloodshed. Ignacio was arrested at the scene and faced multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder. His mother later expressed her heartbreak and fear, stating that while he was still her son, he had taken something irreplaceable from their family.
