In a quiet residential neighborhood in Goodyear, Arizona, the life of 29-year-old Antoine Rogers was cut short on April 10, 2018. Responding to reports of shots fired in the area of Cotton Lane and Van Buren Street, police officers discovered Rogers deceased at the scene inside his home. His wife and two young children, ages 2 and 8, were also present at the residence at the time of the fatal shooting.
The investigation into the shooting suggested a violent encounter, with witnesses reporting seeing three to four males leaving the area. The motive for the crime, as indicated by law enforcement, appeared to be drug-related. The incident was described by police as an isolated event.
Within days of the shooting, the Goodyear Police Department made arrests in connection with the homicide. Two men, identified as 23-year-old Joseph Gutierrez and 20-year-old Anthony Perry Michael Cornejo, were taken into custody. One of the suspects had sustained a gunshot wound and sought treatment at a hospital, where he was found to be in possession of items related to the shooting. Cornejo reportedly admitted to driving the vehicle used to flee the scene. Both Gutierrez and Cornejo faced a charge of first-degree murder for their alleged involvement in the death of Antoine Rogers.
