Hannah Gottier, 14, female, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, died on September 17, 2018. That afternoon, police were called around 3:30 p.m. to the 600 block of Beachcomber Boulevard for reports of shots fired. Officers arrived to find two females lying outside the residence, both fatally shot.
Investigators determined that Hannah and her mother had just returned home when Hannah’s father, 42-year-old Tobin Gottier, fired from inside the house, killing them as they arrived.
He then went outside and took his own life while seated in a truck under the carport. Detectives said the motive remained unclear as they pieced together the events of the day.
In the days that followed, the loss reverberated at Lake Havasu High School, where classmates created a memorial and spelled Hannah’s name in flowers along the sidewalk; she had been a freshman there. The remembrance underscored how abruptly the violence had intruded on a routine school day for a family returning home together.
No arrests were made. Authorities identified the sole suspect as Hannah’s father, who died by suicide at the scene, and classified the case as a double murder-suicide.
