In a senseless act of road rage, 10-year-old Summer Mellody Bell Brown was fatally shot in Phoenix, Arizona, on the evening of April 3, 2019. The young girl, a fifth-grader at Holdeman Elementary, was in the car with her father, mother, and sister, returning home when the tragic events unfolded.
The family was driving near their home when her father, Dharquintium Brown, reportedly cut off another driver. This seemingly minor traffic incident escalated quickly and violently.
The driver of the other vehicle, a white pickup truck, followed the family to their residence. As Brown pulled into his own driveway, the suspect stopped behind them, got out of his truck, and opened fire on the family's car.
Both Summer and her father were struck by the gunfire. They were rushed to a local hospital, where Summer succumbed to her injuries. Her father was treated for his wounds and survived. Summer’s mother and sister, who were also in the car, were not physically harmed but were left to witness the horrific event.
The Phoenix Police Department immediately launched an investigation, releasing a composite sketch of the suspect and surveillance images of the white Ford F-150 involved. The community responded with numerous tips, which proved crucial in identifying a person of interest.
Two days after the shooting, police arrested 20-year-old Joshua Gonzalez in connection with the murder. Investigators found the pickup truck, which had been altered with new tires and wheels in an attempt to change its appearance. A handgun discovered at Gonzalez's residence was forensically linked to the shooting. Gonzalez, who was known to law enforcement and had a history of violent offenses, was charged with first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault. He was taken into custody and held on a one-million-dollar bond.
