On a pleasant spring evening in Glendale, Arizona, a gathering of people for a barbecue took a tragic and violent turn, resulting in the death of 31-year-old Damon Odell Frye, a Black male. The date was April 6, 2019, and Frye was at an apartment complex near 59th and Olive avenues, enjoying a cookout in the courtyard area. An argument broke out between Frye and another man, shattering the peaceful atmosphere of the evening.
The dispute escalated dramatically when the other man,
identified as 52-year-old Karriem Seymour, allegedly brandished a weapon. In a sudden act of violence, Seymour is said to have shot Frye. The single gunshot wound proved to be life-threatening. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Frye was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. In the chaos that followed the shooting, Seymour fled the scene in a vehicle before police could arrive.
Witnesses at the barbecue were able to identify Karriem Seymour as the man who shot Damon Frye. This information provided Glendale police with a crucial lead in their investigation. A felony warrant was issued for Seymour's arrest on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault. However, by this time, Seymour had already absconded from the state of Arizona. The search for him extended beyond state lines, and on May 16, 2019, authorities located and apprehended him in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was taken into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, Karriem Seymour was extradited back to Maricopa County, Arizona, to face the charges against him for the death of Damon Odell Frye. He was booked into jail with a bond set at one million dollars.
