The events of that evening unfolded in a residence near Mesa Drive and Broadway Road, where a witness reported hearing two gunshots. Upon opening his bedroom door, the witness discovered Osuna-Apodaca unresponsive and bleeding from gunshot wounds to his head and neck.
Standing in the apartment with a handgun was Daniel Villalobos-Espinoza, who ominously told the witness to 'mind his own business.'
The investigation into the death of Carlos Osuna-Apodaca quickly focused on Daniel Villalobos-Espinoza and his brother, Jesus. A friend of both the suspects and the victim informed police of past disputes, suggesting that one of the brothers was likely to shoot Osuna-Apodaca. During questioning, Jesus Villalobos-Espinoza admitted to being at the victim's apartment when his brother Daniel arrived unexpectedly.
