In December of 2019, a tragic altercation in Phoenix led to the death of 35-year-old Javon Hatcher. On the night of Friday, December 13th, Phoenix police officers were called to the scene on Ocotillo Road, near Glendale Avenue and the I-17 freeway. Upon their arrival, they discovered Hatcher suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency services from the Phoenix Fire Department transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.

investigations revealed that Hatcher had been involved in an altercation with another man just before the shooting occurred. In the immediate aftermath, the suspect, described as an adult male, had fled the scene, leaving authorities to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. The search for the person responsible for Hatcher's death began, as his family and community were left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss.
A break in the case came when investigators identified 44-year-old Rodney Vinson as the primary suspect. Vinson was located in another jurisdiction where he was being held on unrelated charges. Following his apprehension, he was booked on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Javon Hatcher. The arrest brought a sense of closure to the immediate search for a suspect, though it did little to ease the pain of those who knew and loved Hatcher. The case took another turn when detectives announced they had linked Vinson to an unsolved sexual assault case from 2001, adding another layer to the criminal proceedings against him.
