On a Monday afternoon in Sierra Vista, Arizona, a burst of violence shattered the ordinary rhythm of the city. It was September 28, 2020, when 18-year-old Jorge Portillo was driving his black pickup truck along Fry Boulevard. At approximately 4:30 PM, a red Honda coupe pulled up alongside him. Inside the Honda, a series of shots rang out, with four rounds tearing into the driver's side of Portillo's truck.
One of these bullets found a tragic path, shattering the rear driver's side window, passing through the headrest, and striking Portillo in the head. His truck, now without a driver in control, veered off the road and came to a halt in a nearby wash. Jorge Portillo was rushed to Canyon Vista Medical Center, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, thanks to witnesses who remained at the scene and provided crucial information to the Sierra Vista Police Department. Their accounts pointed to the red Honda, which was soon found abandoned at an apartment complex. The car was registered to 20-year-old Rick Walter Martin, who quickly became the primary person of interest. Less than 24 hours after the fatal shooting, Martin surrendered to law enforcement and was taken into custody without incident.
Rick Walter Martin was subsequently charged with a litany of felonies, including first-degree murder, aggravated assault, attempted first-degree murder, endangerment, and misconduct with a weapon. As the case unfolded, it was revealed that Martin had a significant criminal history, dating back to his early teens, and was on federal probation at the time of the shooting for a conviction related to human smuggling. The motive for the shooting appeared to stem from an earlier conflict between Portillo and Martin. Several weeks prior to the deadly encounter, Portillo's girlfriend had been involved in a minor car accident with a vehicle belonging to Martin's mother, leading to an alleged assault on Portillo by Martin. Facing a life sentence if convicted, Martin's trial was initially set for February 2021.
