In the early morning hours of December 19, 2020, Toby Lee Uribe, a 47-year-old male, was working as a clerk at a Quick Mart on Tucson's South Side. Shortly before 3:00 a.m., two young men entered the store. One of the men proceeded to force open a beer cooler while the other aimed a firearm at Uribe. After taking merchandise, one of the men shot Uribe as they were leaving the store.
Concern for Uribe's welfare prompted a call to the Tucson Police Department shortly before 5:00 a.m.
Officers arrived at the Quick Mart located at 6301 S. Park Ave. to find Uribe with evident signs of gunshot trauma. Despite the response from Tucson Fire Medics, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A few hours later, a traffic collision at the intersection of S. Park Ave. and E. Benson Hwy. led to a significant development in the case. Responding officers recognized that two of the passengers involved in the crash matched the descriptions of the suspects from the convenience store shooting. The two individuals, identified as 19-year-old Isaias Gastelum-Arvizu and 18-year-old Omar Tello-Fierros, were detained at the scene along with the driver of the vehicle, David Adrian Olvera.
Following an investigation by detectives, all three men were arrested in connection with the death of Toby Uribe. Gastelum-Arvizu, Tello-Fierros, and Olvera each face charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery, aggravated robbery, and first-degree burglary. Olvera is also facing additional charges related to the traffic accident.
