In the winter of 2021, a young man's life was tragically cut short inside a bustling Phoenix shopping center. Seventeen-year-old Alejandro Martinez was shot and killed on February 14, 2021, at the Desert Sky Mall, located in the area of 75th Avenue and Thomas Road. The incident, which also left a 20-year-old man with serious but non-fatal injuries, sent shockwaves through the community and left a family grieving an unimaginable loss.
The events of that Sunday afternoon unfolded following
a dispute at a kiosk within the mall. According to the Phoenix Police Department, an argument over merchandise escalated, leading to a fatal confrontation. Investigators reported that at some point during the altercation, one of the victims displayed a firearm, and subsequently, both he and Martinez were shot. When police officers arrived at the scene around 12:40 p.m., they found the two young men with gunshot wounds inside the shopping center.
Emergency personnel transported both victims to local hospitals. While the 20-year-old was expected to survive his injuries, Alejandro Martinez was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The employee at the kiosk, who was involved in the initial argument, remained at the scene and cooperated with the ongoing investigation.
Following the shooting, Phoenix Police homicide detectives worked to piece together the sequence of events through evidence and witness statements. Their investigation led them to identify a suspect in the case. On February 26, 2021, just over a week after the shooting, detectives arrested 20-year-old Alexi Acosta. He was subsequently booked on charges of murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Alejandro Martinez and the injury of the second victim.
