In the winter of 2013, a life was abruptly cut short in Phoenix, Arizona. On the afternoon of Sunday, December 8th, 29-year-old Andre Wilkes was in the driveway of a residence at 1250 E. Bell Road when he was shot. After being wounded, Wilkes ran into the street before collapsing. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and died. The suspects in his shooting were described as two Black males.
An obituary published later that month confirmed his passing.
More than a decade later, another young man with a similar name lost his life to gun violence in the same city. In the early morning hours of August 30, 2024, 20-year-old Andres Wilkes was involved in a fatal altercation near a convenience store at 1700 W. Van Buren Street. Just after 12:30 a.m., an argument broke out between Wilkes and 22-year-old Jesus Erlandson-Gonzales Jr. The dispute quickly escalated into a gunfight, during which both men were struck by gunfire. When Phoenix police officers arrived at the scene, they found both Wilkes and Erlandson-Gonzales with gunshot wounds. The Phoenix Fire Department responded and pronounced both men dead at the scene. Homicide investigators believe that Erlandson-Gonzales instigated the initial argument that led to the deadly shootout. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
