In the late hours of a November night in Buckeye, Arizona, the life of 16-year-old Efrain Escobar was tragically cut short. On November 13, 2021, the young man, a student-athlete with a promising future, was fatally shot multiple times in the parking lot of a QuikTrip gas station near McDowell Road and Jackrabbit Trail. The sudden violence left his family and community in shock and mourning for a life taken too soon.
Efrain was remembered by his family as a leader and a great role model who was a hard worker and a star athlete.
The investigation into the shooting led Buckeye Police to a then-17-year-old suspect named Eric Anthony Buchanan. It was later revealed that the motive for the killing was jealousy, as Efrain was in a relationship with Buchanan's ex-girlfriend. Investigators learned that Buchanan had made violent threats via text messages before the deadly encounter. The premeditated nature of the crime, as described by the Escobar family's attorney, added another layer of heartbreak for his loved ones.
In the pursuit of justice for Efrain, Eric Anthony Buchanan was arrested and faced legal proceedings. He eventually reached a plea deal, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. In June 2023, a judge sentenced Buchanan to 25 years in prison for the murder and a concurrent seven-and-a-half-year sentence for the aggravated assault. While the family expressed that they had hoped for a longer sentence, they found a measure of closure in the fact that the person responsible for Efrain's death was held accountable for his actions.
