In the late hours of a spring evening in Tucson, Arizona, a life was tragically cut short. On April 30, 2022, 22-year-old Jesus Lopez III, a Black / African American male, was killed. The night began as a social gathering at the residence he shared with his roommate, but it would end in violence and loss.
According to police reports, a verbal disagreement between Lopez and his roommate, Sebastian Ricardo Mendivil-Lopez, also 22, spiraled into a physical fight.
In the heat of the moment, a gun was fired, and Lopez was struck. When Tucson Police Department officers arrived at the scene in the 1000 block of West Miracle Mile, they discovered Lopez in the roadway with obvious signs of gunshot trauma. Despite any efforts to render aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led directly to Lopez's roommate. Sebastian Ricardo Mendivil-Lopez was identified as the suspect and was subsequently taken into custody. He was later booked into the Pima County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder in what was described as an act of domestic violence.
The untimely death of Jesus Lopez III left his family and friends to grieve a future that was taken away. His passing was publicly announced, and funeral services were held to honor his memory. He is survived by his grandmother, father, and sister, who now carry the weight of his absence.
