On January 13, 2013, Melvin Kosbruk, a 28-year-old male from Anchorage, was found dead inside the apartment he shared with his 67-year-old roommate, Gary Erwin, in the 500 block of Irwin Street. They were discovered by the landlord after a worried family member requested a welfare check, and Anchorage Police opened a double-homicide investigation under case number 13-1972.
