On a tragic afternoon in Tucson, Arizona, the life of 36-year-old Jessica Garcia was cut short in a violent sequence of events. On July 1, 2022, Garcia was a passenger in a Dodge truck driven by her boyfriend, 45-year-old Joseph Brandon Gourley. Their journey came to an abrupt and devastating halt at the intersection of East 5th Street and North Wilmot Road when their truck collided with a Kia Soul.
What began as a two-vehicle collision quickly escalated into a homicide.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing Gourley exit the truck immediately after the crash. Before fleeing the area on foot, he fatally shot Garcia. When law enforcement arrived, they discovered Garcia unresponsive in the truck with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. The occupants of the Kia Soul sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also transported to the hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Tucson police established a perimeter and began a search for Gourley. He was located in a nearby yard and taken into custody. Following an investigation by homicide detectives, which included interviews and the collection of evidence from the scene, Joseph Brandon Gourley was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Jessica Garcia. He was subsequently booked into the Pima County Jail.
