On a late Saturday afternoon in Phoenix, Arizona, the life of 18-year-old Miguel Rosas was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. The incident unfolded around 4:15 p.m. on September 10, 2022, in the parking lot of a strip mall located at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Bell Road. When Phoenix police officers arrived at the scene, they found the young man on the ground, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response from the fire department, Miguel Rosas was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The chaos of the event also left another person, a woman, injured. She was discovered inside one of the businesses in the strip mall, having been struck by the reckless gunfire. Fortunately, her injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening, and she was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Investigators believe that Rosas was the intended target of the shooting, which they described as an exchange of gunfire between a few individuals in the parking lot. The injured woman is thought to have been an uninvolved bystander who was caught in the crossfire.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement, with the assistance of the Air Unit, cordoned off the area and detained three individuals for questioning. However, after being interviewed by homicide detectives, they were subsequently released. The investigation pressed on, and two days later, on September 12, 2022, the Phoenix Police Department announced a significant development in the case. Detectives from the Homicide Unit, Street Crimes Unit, and the Fugitive Apprehension & Investigations Detail had worked tirelessly to identify and locate a suspect. Their efforts led to the arrest of a male juvenile in his late teens. The young suspect was set to be booked on multiple felony charges, including the grave charge of second-degree murder, bringing a measure of progress to a case that had so violently impacted the community.
