In the arid landscape of Tucson, Arizona, a domestic dispute on October 20, 2022, tragically ended the life of 56-year-old Howard Ocskai. The conflict, which began as a heated argument between Howard and his son, Nicholas Ocskai, escalated to a fatal confrontation on their shared property.
The initial disagreement reportedly led to Howard producing a handgun and pointing it at his son. Following this tense moment, both men retreated to their separate residences on the same piece of land.
However, the separation was short-lived. According to Nicholas's account to the police, his father later entered his trailer, where a second altercation ensued. Nicholas claimed that his father put him in a chokehold, strangled him, and poked him in the stomach with a cane.
During this second fight, a 'black pipe shotgun' that Nicholas possessed was allegedly grabbed by Howard, who then threw one of the two pieces of the weapon outside. After the two separated again, Nicholas went to retrieve the pieces of the homemade shotgun to reassemble it. He told investigators that as he was putting the weapon back together, it accidentally discharged, striking his father in the torso. Howard Ocskai was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A different perspective on the events came from a text message Howard sent to his wife. In the message, he stated that everyone was 'OK' and that Nicholas had shoved him, put his hands around his neck, and had been banging on the house with 'this metal pipe weapon thing.' Following the shooting, Nicholas Ocskai, who was 30 years old at the time, was arrested at the scene. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in the death of his father and was held in the Pima County jail.
