On October 24, 2022, Elena Hernandez, a 20-year-old woman from Mesa, Arizona, was fatally shot in an incident that occurred inside a vehicle near the Superstition Springs Mall. The shooting happened just before 2:00 p.m. when a 16-year-old boy, who was in the backseat of the car, accidentally fired a handgun while playing with it. The bullet went through the back of the front passenger seat and struck Elena, who was sitting in the front seat.
