On the morning of October 8, 2024, 52-year-old Michelle Flippin was at a bus stop near Center Street and McKellips Road in Mesa, Arizona, on her way to a new job. It was a Tuesday, around 7:30 a.m., and what began as a day of promise quickly turned into a scene of unimaginable violence. As Flippin waited, a man, later identified as 44-year-old Andrew Rada, was parked at a nearby gas station.
For reasons that remain unclear, Rada, armed with an AK-47-style rifle, approached the bus stop and opened fire on Flippin, a complete stranger to him.
The attack was sudden and brutal. Rada fired between 10 to 15 shots, and investigators later found nearly 40 shell casings at the scene. Witnesses who heard the gunshots initially mistook them for a bus backfiring, but soon realized the horrifying reality of the situation. Michelle Flippin, a mother of three, was struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her children would later describe her as their rock and protector, a selfless woman who was always there for others. They expressed their utter disbelief that such a vicious act could happen to someone who was simply minding her own business.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Rada fled the scene in a burgundy Ram truck. Thanks to detailed witness descriptions and the Mesa Police Department's Real-Time Crime Center, which utilized intersection cameras, officers were able to quickly locate the vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted at McKellips Road and Loop 202, and Andrew Rada was taken into custody without incident. A passenger in the truck was also detained on an unrelated felony warrant but was not implicated in the shooting.
During questioning, Rada admitted to his involvement in the shooting. He claimed that Flippin had been waving a chrome handgun and talking loudly, causing people to flee the area. However, this assertion was directly contradicted by surveillance footage from several cameras in the vicinity. The video evidence showed that Flippin was unarmed, smoking a cigarette, and had her back to Rada when he began his deadly assault. There was no known connection between Rada and Flippin, making the attack appear to be a random act of violence. Andrew Rada was subsequently booked on one count of first-degree murder.
