In the warmth of a Phoenix evening on June 20, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Tremuir Richard Thompson was tragically cut short by gun violence. A Black/African American male and a student at South Pointe High School, he was remembered for his goofy, outgoing, and loving personality. Tremuir, who had just turned 16 earlier that month, had dreams of becoming a professional athlete and played football at his high school.
His family and friends knew him as a good young man who focused on school and sports.
The night of his death, Tremuir was on his way home after playing basketball with his brother. As they were in a car near 48th Street and Baseline Road, another vehicle reportedly drove up and someone inside began shooting. The bullets tore through the car, and one struck Tremuir. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery, but he did not survive his injuries. Family members have adamantly stated that Tremuir was not involved in any gangs and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, an innocent bystander to a senseless act of violence.
This tragedy was compounded by the fact that it was the second time in three months that the Thompson family had been devastated by gun violence. Just three months prior, Tremuir's 16-year-old sister, Re'Mijae Thompson, was also shot and killed in a separate incident. She too was described as an innocent victim, killed when the car she was in was shot at in Glendale. The immense grief of losing two children in such a short period left their family and the wider community in profound shock and mourning.
In the wake of Tremuir's death, his family pleaded with the public for anyone with information to come forward to help find those responsible. Both the Phoenix and Glendale police departments are investigating the separate, but tragically similar, homicides of the two siblings.
