In the early morning hours of July 15, 2015, a workplace dispute at a U.S. Airways flight training facility in Phoenix, Arizona, turned fatal, ending the life of 34-year-old Eric Kunins. A Black man and a United States Air Force veteran, Kunins worked as a flight simulator technician on the overnight shift. An argument erupted between Kunins and his 52-year-old co-worker, George Hayes Jr., reportedly over a spare part for a flight simulator or the placement of a lightbulb in the stockroom.
The verbal confrontation escalated into a physical altercation. Hayes, who was holding a long screwdriver, claimed that the unarmed Kunins struck him, causing him to fall backward and swing his arm with the tool in his hand. Kunins was stabbed once in his upper back on the left side and collapsed. According to one witness, Hayes initially claimed that Kunins had 'passed out and fell on my screwdriver,' while another co-worker reported that Hayes announced he had 'stabbed Eric.' Kunins was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Following the incident, George Hayes Jr. was interviewed by police but was not arrested, as he claimed he acted in self-defense. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office reviewed the case and ultimately decided not to file murder charges against Hayes, citing the possibility of self-defense and the high burden of proof required by Arizona state law in such cases. This decision sparked outrage from Kunins's family, who advocated for what they believed was justice for Eric. Friends and supporters of Kunins also created a social media page to call for action against Hayes. Despite their efforts, no charges were filed in connection with the death of Eric Kunins.
