A simmering family dispute in Phoenix erupted into deadly violence on the evening of February 3, 2024, leaving 32-year-old Jose Angel Ruiz Leyva, a male, shot and killed. The fatal encounter began with a heated verbal argument between Ruiz Leyva and his 20-year-old stepson, Jorge Adrian Ramirez, at a residence. The conflict spilled onto the streets as both men left in separate vehicles.
Following the argument, the situation escalated into a road rage incident.
As Ramirez attempted to drive away, Ruiz Leyva pulled ahead and began 'brake checking' him. Enraged by this, Ramirez got out of his car at the intersection of 40th Avenue and Hadley Street, walked over to his stepfather's vehicle, and fired a handgun multiple times into the car. After the shooting, Ramirez fled the scene.
Phoenix police officers responded to reports of the shooting around 5:35 p.m. and found Ruiz Leyva with at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Investigators quickly turned to surveillance footage from the area, which captured images of the suspect's vehicle. The Phoenix Police Department released these images to the public, leading to a swift identification of the car and its owner.
The vehicle was registered to Jorge Adrian Ramirez. The day after the shooting, on February 4, 2024, police located and arrested Ramirez without incident. During questioning, Ramirez confessed to killing his stepfather. He claimed to have used his mother's gun and alleged that his motive was related to Ruiz Leyva's physical abuse of his mother, an allegation she later confirmed to the police. Ramirez was subsequently booked into the Maricopa County Jail on charges including second-degree murder and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
