Juan Jose Dominguez-Hernandez, a 20-year-old resident of Stockton, California, tragically lost his life on August 15, 2018. The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. when Juan, after finishing his shift at a Panda Express on Fremont Street, walked to the back of the parking lot to his vehicle. Unbeknownst to him, two individuals, Andrew Whitlach and a 13-year-old boy, were lying in wait with the intention of robbing him of his car keys. Whitlach, who was a minor at the time, had armed the younger boy with a revolver and instructed him to shoot Juan in the leg if he did not comply with their demands. When Juan resisted, he was pistol-whipped by the 13-year-old while Whitlach restrained him. The situation escalated, and the young boy shot Juan in the head. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Juan was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.

Following the murder, Whitlach and the 13-year-old fled the scene in Juan's car, only to crash it later that morning in a Burlington Coat Factory parking lot in Sacramento. They were apprehended by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. The case drew significant attention due to the involvement of such a young perpetrator and the brutal nature of the crime. Whitlach was tried as an adult and was found guilty of first-degree murder and carjacking. In December 2022, he was sentenced to 29 years to life in prison, with 25 years for the murder charge and an additional four years for the carjacking charge, to be served consecutively.

The tragic death of Juan Dominguez-Hernandez not only highlighted the dangers faced by young workers but also underscored the severe consequences of youth involvement in violent crimes. The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office emphasized their commitment to holding those who commit such heinous acts accountable. The case also brought to light the broader issues of juvenile crime and the legal system's approach to handling minors involved in serious offenses. The community of Stockton mourned the loss of a young life cut short and grappled with the implications of such a violent act occurring in their midst.
