In a quiet residential neighborhood in Casa Grande, Arizona, the morning of March 11, 2024, was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 45-year-old Steve Shinault. A Black / African American man, Shinault was tragically shot multiple times in the torso during an altercation. The incident unfolded in the 1900 block of North Vista Lane, where Shinault found himself in a confrontation with another Casa Grande resident.
The tragic event occurred in the presence of Shinault's
16-year-old daughter. In a desperate attempt to protect her and escape the danger, Shinault got into his vehicle and tried to drive away from the scene. However, due to his severe injuries, he lost control of the car and crashed into two houses in the 1100 block of East Prickly Pear Street a short distance away. Despite his daughter's efforts to save him, he succumbed to his wounds at Banner Hospital. No one else was injured in the incident.
The Casa Grande Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation and identified 49-year-old Marcus Hatton as the suspect. Authorities announced that Hatton had fled the scene and was to be considered armed and dangerous. The investigation revealed that Shinault and Hatton were acquainted with each other and had been engaged in an altercation outside of a residence just before the shooting.
The manhunt for Hatton concluded the following day, on March 12, 2024, when he voluntarily surrendered to the Casa Grande Police Department, accompanied by his attorney. Hatton was taken into custody and transported to the Pinal County Adult Detention Center. He faces a series of charges, including Murder, Aggravated Assault, Weapons Misconduct, Endangerment, and Disorderly Conduct with a Weapon.
