In a quiet Goodyear, Arizona neighborhood, a tragedy unfolded, leaving a family shattered and a community in shock. Brenda Gelleny, a 65-year-old woman, was found deceased in her home, the victim of a single gunshot wound. The events leading to her death began to surface after her husband of many years, 67-year-old Michael Gelleny, placed a call to the Goodyear Police Department, confessing to the murder of his wife.
Upon their arrival at the residence near Estrella Parkway and
Tanglewood Drive, officers discovered Brenda's body. Michael Gelleny was taken into custody without incident and was later charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of tampering with physical evidence. During his interview with detectives, he claimed that his wife had been suffering from chronic pain for over four years and that he had made the decision to end her life. He admitted to planning the act for a couple of weeks, and on that fateful morning, he loaded a gun before Brenda woke up.

He stated that he kissed his wife, told her he loved her, and then shot her in the back of the head as she walked down a hallway, believing it would be quick and painless. While Michael Gelleny cited his wife's physical suffering as his motive, a 2022 social media post by Brenda revealed her struggles with depression, financial difficulties, the death of her oldest son, and estrangement from her youngest son. In the post, she expressed feelings of hopelessness, stating, 'I have nothing left. Nothing to live for.'
