Payton Benson, a 5-year-old Black girl, was at home in Omaha, Nebraska, on the morning of January 15, 2014, eating breakfast when a stray bullet tore through her house near 45th Street and Bedford Avenue and struck her. Investigators said the gunfire erupted about a block away; she was not the intended target. Police later described the shooting as stemming from an exchange aimed at rivals on the street outside.
