Nomi Herrera, a 19-year-old Caucasian female, was driving in the area of 33rd and Weber Street in Omaha, Nebraska, on the night of October 29, 2020, when she was struck by a gunshot. Officers initially responded to what was reported as a personal injury accident and discovered Herrera inside her vehicle, which had gone off the road. She was suffering from a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital.
Tragically, Nomi Herrera succumbed to her injuries and passed away the following day, on October 30, 2020.
The investigation into her death quickly moved forward, and on November 6, 2020, the Omaha Police Department made an arrest. A 15-year-old was taken into custody on a charge of being an accessory to first-degree murder in connection with Herrera's shooting. The teen was booked into the Douglas County Youth Center. The investigation, however, was far from over as authorities continued to search for the primary suspect believed to be responsible for firing the fatal shot.
Authorities identified 18-year-old Jaquan Haynes as the main suspect in Nomi Herrera's murder and issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder. A significant reward was offered for information leading to his capture, with the U.S. Marshals matching the Crime Stoppers reward to bring the total to $10,000. The manhunt for Haynes extended beyond Nebraska, culminating in a confrontation in Atlanta, Georgia. On December 29, 2020, members of a U.S. Marshals Service task force attempted to serve the murder warrant at a home where Haynes was located. When officers knocked and announced their presence, Haynes reportedly opened fire on them. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two officers returned fire, striking and killing Jaquan Haynes at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.
