In the early morning hours of March 7, 2014, a gathering of friends at a home in Omaha, Nebraska, turned tragic, ending the life of 21-year-old Brandon Samuels, a Caucasian male. The evening began as an after-hours party, but the atmosphere shifted when three uninvited men and one woman arrived. One of the men, Milton Butler, was there to confront his ex-girlfriend.
An altercation quickly erupted as Butler forcibly removed the woman from the house, prompting others to follow them
outside. A physical fight broke out in the front yard, with Butler, Laron M. Jones, and an unidentified man fighting against another partygoer who had come to the woman's aid. During this confrontation, Jones reportedly brandished a firearm.
After the initial fight subsided and most people returned inside, a second dispute began in the driveway between Butler and another guest. As this was unfolding, a series of gunshots were fired. Brandon Samuels, who was standing on the porch of the home, was struck by bullets in his leg and neck. He succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, Laron M. Jones was arrested and charged. A jury later convicted Jones of first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Brandon Samuels.
