Carlos Alonzo, 40, a Hispanic/Latino male, was found shot to death in the early morning hours of May 28, 2016, outside a home near 20th and Lake Streets in Omaha. Officers had been called around 2:30 a.m. to 2019 Lake Street; when they arrived, they found him dead in the front yard from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Detectives traced the shooting to a house connected to Doloma Curtis, a 47-year-old woman whom both Alonzo and another man, Rolander L. Brown, were dating at the time.
As the investigation unfolded that summer, Curtis was arrested on July 26, 2016, as an accessory to a felony in Alonzo s death, and a warrant was issued for Brown. On September 7, 2016, members of the Metro Fugitive Task Force arrested Brown, then 26, and booked him on first-degree murder and related weapons charges in connection with the May 28 killing.
A Douglas County jury later convicted Brown of second-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, finding that he shot Alonzo outside Curtis s residence amid a love-triangle dispute. In 2017, the court entered judgment on the verdict; Brown ultimately received an aggregate sentence of 100 to 140 years imprisonment. The Nebraska Supreme Court affirmed his convictions and sentences on direct appeal in 2019, and later upheld the denial of his motion for a new trial in 2021, leaving the outcome intact.
