On a summer night in Lincoln, Nebraska, the life of 26-year-old Martae Green, a Black/African American male, came to a violent end. The events of July 24, 2019, began to unfold as a home invasion at the residence of 34-year-old Audrea Craig. Green was one of several individuals who forcibly entered her home. In the ensuing chaos, Craig managed to shoot Green before her own firearm malfunctioned.
Despite being wounded, Green returned fire, fatally shooting Craig.
Following the exchange of gunfire, Green and the others involved fled the scene. He was taken to a local hospital by his accomplices, who informed the staff that he had been shot. Medical efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and Martae Green was pronounced dead from his gunshot wound. The violent encounter left two people dead and set in motion a complex police investigation.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of several individuals. Authorities identified Rubin J. Thomas as the person who orchestrated the failed robbery attempt. Thomas, along with Jesse T. Foster, Sylvester LeBlanc Jr., and Martae Green s own brother, Charles Gresham III, faced charges related to the home invasion and the deaths of both Green and Craig. In the subsequent legal proceedings, Thomas, Foster, LeBlanc Jr., and Gresham all entered pleas to reduced charges.
