On October 25, 2020, the White male was on a father-son hunting trip near Branched Oak Lake in Raymond, Nebraska, when a devastating accident occurred. While reloading his shotgun during a pheasant hunt, the firearm discharged, fatally wounding the boy.
His father, Matthew Holte, heard the shot and turned to find his son on the ground.
In the frantic moments that followed, Gunnar's father located an off-duty police officer nearby, and together they administered CPR in a desperate attempt to save him. The young boy was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries were too severe. Gunnar, a fourth-grader at St. John Lutheran School in Seward, was remembered for his infectious laugh and smile. Known for his friendly nature, it was said that to Gunnar, a stranger was simply a friend he hadn't met yet. He had a curious mind, a love for science, hard rock music, and bad dad jokes, and dreamed of one day becoming an engineer. His sudden passing left his parents, Matthew and Rachel Holte, and his younger sister in profound grief, along with a community that fondly remembered the boy who touched so many hearts.
