Markell Brewer, a 29-year-old Black man, stepped into the late-summer night of September 4, 2016, outside his grandmother’s home near 31st and Decatur Streets in North Omaha. It was just after midnight—between 12:20 and 12:25 a.m.—and he was on a rare night off from work, chatting with friends and family on the front steps. A burst of gunfire shattered the quiet. Responding officers found him wounded; he was rushed to Nebraska Medical Center, where he died.
