Scott Douglas Horine, 51, of Upland, Nebraska, passed away on January 7, 2021, at his home after a prolonged struggle with grief and depression. Born on October 22, 1969, in Minden, Nebraska, to Joan and LeRoy 'Pete' Horine, Scott spent much of his early childhood in Denver, Colorado, and various locations in Arkansas. In his early teens, his family returned to Nebraska, settling in Broken Bow, where he graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1987.
In 1991, Scott married Dani Gates, and
they had three children: Wyatt, Morgan, and Evan. The couple remained in Broken Bow throughout their twelve-year marriage. In 2013, Scott married Wendy Koons, and they moved to a residence north of Upland to be closer to extended family in the Minden area. Although Scott and Wendy divorced in 2019, they remained close and continued to share the same home, nurturing numerous adopted animals together.
Professionally, Scott was known for his strong mechanical abilities and problem-solving skills. He was a certified, factory-trained mechanic for Briggs and Stratton, Tecumseh, and Kohler. His career included positions in the auto salvage industry with Farritor's in Broken Bow, ABC Salvage in North Platte, and H&H in Cozad. He also worked on a highway construction crew with the Nebraska Department of Transportation and owned a home remodeling and construction business. Notably, he operated a 50-ton gantry crane for CXT in Grand Island and served as an assembly supervisor for Patriot Equipment in Minden. His latest endeavor was a growing eBay business.
Scott had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, trapping, and metal detecting. He was known for his detailed stories of outdoor adventures and had a talent for fixing almost anything. He held passionate opinions, especially regarding the United States and its history. Despite presenting a stoic and independent front, those close to him knew him as an intelligent, talented, and caring man with a big heart who loved to laugh. His unresolved pain and grief made him feel inadequate, but his loved ones remember him fondly and wish he could have seen himself through their eyes.
Scott is survived by his son, Wyatt Horine of Greeley, Colorado; daughter, Morgan Horine of Omaha, Nebraska; half-sister, Mickey Krieth of Gardnerville, Nevada; half-brother, Mike Hostetler of North Little Rock, Arkansas; former wives, Dani Gates of Broken Bow and Wendy Koons of Upland; uncle, Randy Horine of Minden; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joan and Pete Horine; son, Evan Horine; sister, Vicky Horine; and half-sister, Marsha Horine.
A celebration of life open house in remembrance of Scott was held on January 16, 2021, at The Windmill in Minden. Memorials were suggested to the family, with Craig Funeral Home in Minden assisting with arrangements.
