On a cold Saturday night in Bellevue, Nebraska, on January 22, 2022, the life of Deyvonndra L. Jones, a 40-year-old Black / African American woman, was tragically cut short. Inside her home near 22nd and Jefferson Street, she suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Police were dispatched to the residence after receiving a call from a man who identified himself as her husband and stated that he had shot his wife.
The couple's child was reportedly asleep upstairs at the time of the incident.
Upon their arrival, officers found Deyvonndra Jones with life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders began to render aid, but there was a delay in getting her to a hospital as all local medical transport units were on other calls. A unit from a neighboring city had to be dispatched. She was eventually transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Deyvonndra was a respected Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, having enlisted in 1999.
At the scene of the shooting, Bellevue police took 43-year-old Lovell Jones Jr. into custody. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Sarpy County Jail. Authorities charged him in connection with the death of his wife. The charges filed against him included second-degree murder, first-degree domestic assault, and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
