On August 12, 2022, Anthony Collins III, a 22-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in Omaha, Nebraska. The incident occurred near North 49th and Charles Streets. Collins was transported by private vehicle to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The Omaha Police Department identified 20-year-old Wuanya Smith as the primary suspect in the case.
An arrest warrant was issued for Smith on charges of second-degree murder, use of a weapon to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Smith fled the state and was located in Benton, Arkansas, where he was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service on September 7, 2022. However, he escaped custody shortly after by scaling barbed-wire fences at the detention center but was recaptured the following day.
Following his extradition to Omaha, Smith was booked into Douglas County Corrections. In September 2023, he entered a no-contest plea to a reduced charge of manslaughter. The court accepted the plea, and Smith was convicted, facing a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison. His sentencing was scheduled for October 24, 2023.
