Joquon Coverdale, a 22-year-old Black male, was shot on the evening of May 5, 2017, near 2nd and Van Buren Streets in Wilmington after a patrol officer heard a burst of gunfire around 8 p.m. Responding officers found him in the street with wounds to the head and torso; he was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he died. He was later publicly identified by police as the victim in that Hilltop-area shooting.
