On August 1, 2002, Barbara Bassett, a 52-year-old resident of Sweden, Maine, was fatally shot in her home by her former boyfriend, James Nadeau. Bassett, known for her work as a court advocate for battered women, had recently ended her relationship with Nadeau. Following the shooting, Nadeau retreated to his trailer in Norway, Maine, leading to a standoff with the Maine State Police Tactical Unit. After several hours, he surrendered without incident.
