In the quiet town of Clifton, Maine, the morning of January 14, 2019, was shattered by a grim discovery. Kary Dill, a 35-year-old Caucasian woman, was found deceased in the home she shared with her boyfriend of four years, Dwight Osgood Jr., on Airline Road. Osgood himself made the 911 call in the early morning hours to report her death. When authorities arrived, they found Dill on the kitchen floor with a significant amount of blood behind her head and back.
Initially, Osgood, then 37,
suggested to investigators that his girlfriend might have accidentally fallen and hit her head on the wood stove while trying to load it. He claimed to have taken Valium the night before and had woken up to find her lifeless body. However, the scene told a different story. Police discovered what appeared to be a large gunshot wound on her left shoulder, along with two shotguns and an open box of ammunition nearby. The kitchen table was overturned, indicating a possible struggle. The inconsistencies in Osgood's account and the evidence at the scene quickly turned the investigation towards him.
The day after Dill's body was found, Osgood was arrested and charged with her murder. The autopsy confirmed that Kary Dill had died from a birdshot shotgun round to her back. During his arrest, Osgood reportedly acknowledged his role in her death, telling investigators, "It had to be me." Despite an initial not guilty plea, Osgood eventually changed his plea to guilty. In February 2021, Dwight Osgood Jr. was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend. During the sentencing, Dill's mother tearfully described her daughter as someone who was always happy and loved being alive.
