On a summer day in Fairfield, Maine, the life of 6-year-old Kathleen Fisher, a young White girl, came to a tragic end. The events of June 30, 1966, would reveal a deeply troubled history within her own home. On that day, Kathleen, her 4-year-old brother Michael, and their 9-month-old sister Natalie were killed. Their father, Carl Fisher, returned home from work to a scene of unimaginable horror. He discovered his youngest child, Natalie, drowned in the bathtub.
A frantic search led to the discovery of Kathleen and Michael's bodies tucked into their beds, appearing as though they were asleep.
The perpetrator was soon identified as their mother, Constance Fisher. When authorities arrived, they found Constance unconscious in her own bed after a suicide attempt from an overdose of pills. This was not the first time tragedy had struck the Fisher family at the hands of their mother. Twelve years earlier, in 1954, Constance had drowned three of her other children. Following that incident, she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and spent years in a mental institution before being released.
Following the deaths of Kathleen and her siblings, Constance was charged with three counts of murder. She pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The court ultimately found her to be insane and ordered her to be confined to the Augusta State Hospital for the rest of her life. In 1973, Constance managed to escape from the hospital. Her body was later found in the Kennebec River, her death ruled an accidental drowning.
