On a summer evening in North Waterboro, Maine, the life of 45-year-old Christal Hanson Denis, a White female, was tragically cut short. On July 20, 2019, she was found deceased in her home on New Dam Road from a fatal gunshot wound. Her husband, Christopher Denis, also 45, was found deceased beside her in what authorities would later describe as a murder-suicide.
Relatives had become concerned and requested a welfare check at the couple's residence.
It was then that deputies from the York County Sheriff's Office made the grim discovery in the living room of their home. Investigators from the Maine State Police concluded that Christopher Denis shot his wife with a shotgun before turning the weapon on himself. Autopsies later confirmed the cause of death for both individuals.
The community and Christal's family were left in shock, with many expressing that there were no prior signs of domestic trouble. Her sister remembered her as a hardworking individual who was deeply devoted to her children and grandchildren. Christal was a lifelong resident of the area, having graduated from Massabesic High School in 1991. Together with her mother, she co-owned and operated Deer Pond Fuel, a family business she had been a part of for over two decades. The couple had been married for about ten years and were known to enjoy boating on Lake Arrowhead.
There were no records of previous domestic violence calls to the Denis household. Christopher Denis had a minor criminal history with a few misdemeanor charges in the early 2000s, none of which indicated a propensity for such a violent act. The investigation into the deaths concluded that Christopher Denis was the sole suspect in his wife's murder, and with his subsequent suicide, the case was considered closed.
