On June 19, 2023, Brittney Cockrell, 37, and her partner, Michael Hayter, 41, were fatally shot in a parking lot near Main and Bridge Streets in Westbrook, Maine. Their two children, an 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, witnessed the tragic event from the backseat of the family's vehicle. The assailant, identified as 24-year-old Marcel Lagrange Jr. of South Portland, was apprehended at the scene after being tackled and disarmed by bystanders.
