In the quiet community of Hamilton, Montana, the lives of Michael Robert Shook, a 34-year-old White/Caucasian male, and his family were irrevocably shattered on the evening of December 12, 1985. An intruder, later identified as the prime suspect Wayne Nance, forced his way into their home. The chilling encounter began when Nance, armed with a gun and a knife, announced himself to the couple's four-year-old son as "Conan the Barbarian" before pushing past him.
What followed was a brutal
assault. Nance shot Michael's wife, Teresa, in the leg. As Michael rushed to his wife's defense, a violent struggle ensued. The couple fought back, with Michael reportedly using a brass candlestick and Teresa a tennis racket, but they were ultimately overpowered by their attacker. Nance then bound Michael in the living room and fatally stabbed him in the chest.
After murdering Michael, Nance turned his attention to Teresa. He forced her into the bedroom, where their two-year-old daughter was in her crib, and subjected her to a horrific assault before stabbing her to death as well. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Nance tried to set the house on fire before fleeing with a few stolen items. The fire, however, failed to fully engulf the nearly airtight home, smoldering throughout the night and filling the house with noxious fumes. The couple's children were discovered the next morning, miraculously alive but in critical condition, by a family friend.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to Wayne Nance, a man later dubbed "The Missoula Mauler" and linked to a series of violent crimes. Although the investigation initially moved slowly, a crucial breakthrough came when Michael's father, Bob Shook, recognized Nance from a news report and recalled that his son and daughter-in-law had purchased furniture from where Nance worked. He contacted the police, mentioning a hunting knife and a plaster elk that were missing from his son's home. A search of Nance's residence uncovered these stolen items, solidifying him as the primary suspect in the brutal murders. Before he could be formally charged with the deaths of Michael and Teresa Shook, Wayne Nance was killed in a shootout with police in September 1986, bringing an end to his reign of terror but leaving many unanswered questions for the victims' families.
