In May 2005, a horrifying sequence of events began to unfold at a home in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, culminating in the tragic death of 9-year-old Dylan James Groene, a Caucasian male. Joseph Edward Duncan III, a convicted sex offender on the run from a child molestation charge in Minnesota, targeted the Groene family home after spotting Dylan and his younger sister, 8-year-old Shasta, playing outside.
Duncan broke into the house and brutally murdered Dylan's mother, Brenda Groene, her fiancé, Mark McKenzie, and Dylan's 13-year-old brother, Slade Groene, by bludgeoning them with a hammer. Following the murders, Duncan abducted Dylan and Shasta, forcing them into a stolen vehicle and driving them to a remote campsite in the Lolo National Forest in Montana.
For weeks, Duncan held the two children captive at the secluded campsite, subjecting them to horrific abuse and torture. The abduction sparked a massive manhunt and an Amber Alert was issued for the missing children. Much of what transpired during their captivity was later recounted by Shasta, the sole survivor of the ordeal. She described the terrifying abuse she and her brother endured at the hands of their captor. Duncan documented some of his crimes, taking photographs and videos of the abuse.
The nightmare reached its devastating conclusion for Dylan around July 4, 2005. According to Shasta's account, Duncan shot her brother with a shotgun. After inflicting the initial wound, Duncan decided the boy could not be saved and shot him again, this time in the head. In an attempt to dispose of the evidence, Duncan then burned Dylan's body in the campsite's fire pit. Investigators would later recover only small, charred bone fragments and tooth remnants from the fire pit and a nearby area. Forensic analysis confirmed the remains belonged to Dylan James Groene.
Shasta's harrowing experience continued for a short while longer until she was recognized by employees and patrons at a Denny's restaurant in Coeur d'Alene on July 2, 2005, in the company of Duncan. Law enforcement was alerted, and Duncan was arrested without incident. Following his arrest, Duncan pleaded guilty to numerous state and federal charges, including the murders of the Groene family members and the kidnapping and murder of Dylan. For the death of Dylan Groene, a federal jury sentenced Joseph Edward Duncan III to death. He died in prison from brain cancer in March 2021.
