John Smathers, a 25-year-old from Billings, Montana, died on November 21, 2018, from a gunshot wound to the head. His death was ruled a homicide.

William Kenney, a friend of Smathers, was charged with negligent homicide in connection with the shooting. Kenney initially told investigators that they had both decided to shoot themselves after experiencing a bad reaction to psilocybin mushrooms.
