Miguel Henry Martinez, a 19-year-old from Fair Oaks, California, tragically lost his life on May 22, 2015. The incident occurred near a bike trail in Bannister Park, located in the 3800 block of Bannister Road. According to reports, Martinez was with friends who were in possession of a gun and a bulletproof vest. His friends encouraged him to put on the vest, assuring him that he would not be harmed. However, during this ill-fated moment, Elijah Ray Lambert, a 21-year-old from Sacramento, fired the gun. The bullet penetrated the top of the vest, causing Martinez to struggle for breath. Despite efforts by his friends to carry him up the bike path and seek help, Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department arrested Lambert the following day, charging him with homicide. Lambert was booked into the county jail without the possibility of bail. The case drew significant attention due to the senseless nature of the incident. Martinez's brother, Tom Cline, expressed his grief and disbelief, emphasizing that his brother did not deserve such a fate. He also mentioned that the bulletproof vest and gun's origins were unknown, and he believed that his brother might have survived if help had been sought sooner.

The investigation revealed that Lambert had a prior criminal record, including charges related to robbery and weapons. The authorities noted that the killing was unintentional, but it highlighted the dangers of mishandling firearms and the tragic consequences that can ensue. Lambert faced a murder charge and was expected to appear before a judge to answer to the charges. The community of Fair Oaks was left in shock, grappling with the loss of a young life in such a preventable manner.
