In the small town of Kevin, Montana, the morning of April 22, 2019, was shattered by a grim discovery that would unravel a violent sequence of events. Jeromy Wade Bryant, a 43-year-old Caucasian male, was found deceased in a residence, the victim of a fatal shooting. The Toole County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene, initiating an investigation into the apparent homicide.
The inquiry quickly led authorities to a suspect, 50-year-old Richard A. Moench of Shelby. Investigators learned that following the shooting in Kevin, Moench had forcibly taken a female hostage at gunpoint from the same location. He then transported her to his own home in the nearby town of Shelby, where he barricaded himself inside with his captive, creating a tense standoff with law enforcement.
A perimeter was established around Moench's residence as multiple law enforcement agencies, including a police negotiator, were called in to assist.
After a period of negotiation, authorities were successful in securing the safe release of the female hostage. However, the standoff did not end peacefully. Negotiations with Moench continued, but he eventually opened fire on the officers from within his home.
In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, law enforcement officers returned fire. Once the shooting ceased and officers were able to enter the residence, they found Richard A. Moench deceased inside. The investigation into the entire incident was subsequently handed over to the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation.
