In the vast expanse of Montana, the life of a young white male, Henry Porter, aged 22, came to a tragic end on April 15, 2021, near the town of West Yellowstone. His death was the culmination of a desperate attempt to evade law enforcement.
The chain of events that led to this fatal conclusion began to unfold when police in Billings were dispatched for a welfare check. Inside a residence, they made the grim discovery of 64-year-old Roxann Renee Watson, who had been beaten and strangled.
As their investigation progressed, Henry Porter and a 28-year-old woman named Erika Viola Kikker Miller, both from Billings, were identified as persons of interest in Watson's homicide.
A search for the pair was initiated, and later that same day, law enforcement officers from various state and federal agencies located Porter and Miller's vehicle. A pursuit ensued, stretching across the rugged Montana landscape for approximately 230 miles. Near West Yellowstone, the chase came to an abrupt halt when Porter and Miller abandoned their vehicle and fled into the dense woods.
Law enforcement established a perimeter around the area but did not immediately follow them into the dark woods. A short time later, officers reported hearing two gunshots. For hours, the fate of the two suspects remained unknown. It wasn't until a K9 unit was deployed that the bodies of Henry Porter and Erika Miller were found, about four hours after the gunshots were heard. Both had sustained single gunshot wounds to the head. The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office later described the incident as an apparent homicide-suicide, though it was not specified who fired the fatal shots.
