On May 29, 1999, Donna Fontaine, 44, and her boyfriend, Fred Palahniuk, 59, were found dead in a burned garage on property owned by Fontaine's family near Kendrick, Idaho. Autopsies revealed that both victims had suffered fatal gunshot wounds before the fire was set. Fontaine had shotgun pellets in her chest and a bullet wound to the back of her neck, while Palahniuk had a bullet lodged behind his upper breastbone.
