On a winter evening in Meridian, Idaho, the life of 40-year-old Heidi RaNae De Leon, a Caucasian female, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On January 6, 2019, her ex-husband, Edward Lynn Epps Jr., forced his way into the home she shared with her new husband, 47-year-old Jose "Joe" Paul De Leon. Armed with two handguns, Epps began shooting, creating a scene of terror that would leave three adults dead and forever alter the lives of the children present.
The horrifying events
unfolded at a residence on West Charles Street. As Epps stormed the house, Joe De Leon attempted to intervene but was shot multiple times and died in the hallway. Heidi fled towards the back of the house, but Epps forced his way into a back bedroom and shot her multiple times as well. The attack occurred while three young girls were in the home: Heidi and Epps's two daughters, ages 10 and 13, and Joe De Leon's 11-year-old daughter. The eldest girl managed to escape to a neighbor's house to call for help, initiating a police response and a tense standoff.
For hours, Epps held the two younger girls hostage. Meridian Police, along with other law enforcement agencies, surrounded the home and entered into negotiations with him. Through these negotiations, police were able to secure the release of both children unharmed. After freeing the girls, however, Edward Epps Jr. turned a gun on himself, ending his own life. The Ada County Coroner later confirmed that both Heidi and Joe De Leon died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Epps died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The motive for the deadly attack was rooted in a history of conflict between Heidi and her ex-husband. Court records indicated a prolonged and contentious divorce, which was filed in 2011 and finalized in 2015, followed by ongoing battles over child custody and support. In fact, the day before the shooting, Epps had been served with a civil protection order. The couple was also scheduled to appear in court later that month regarding a petition to modify their child support agreement. Heidi had expressed fear for her life and had sought help, even documenting threats Epps had made. The incident was investigated as a murder-suicide, and with the perpetrator deceased, no arrests were made.
