In the late afternoon of March 30, 2022, the city of Idaho Falls was jolted by a violent incident that unfolded behind a local Planet Fitness. Ulises Michael Rangel, a 44-year-old Caucasian male, was found bleeding and unresponsive in the parking lot. First responders arrived to a grim scene; Rangel had sustained what appeared to be a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the location.
The area was quickly secured by the Idaho Falls Police Department, who began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to this tragedy.
Investigators immediately launched a homicide investigation, turning to the silent witnesses of modern life: security cameras. Footage from a nearby ice cream parlor proved to be a critical piece of the puzzle. The video showed two individuals near a distinctive 1980 white Ford F350. Shortly after, Ulises Rangel was seen approaching the truck, and an altercation ensued with a man later identified as Jake D. Eilander, a 37-year-old resident of Bonneville County. Although no physical contact was visible on the recording, the two men assumed a fighting stance before Rangel was seen walking away and then collapsing. A witness in the vicinity reported hearing a gunshot around 3:30 p.m. and saw Eilander and his girlfriend leaving the scene.
The investigation moved swiftly, and armed with the evidence from the surveillance footage and witness statements, authorities identified Jake Eilander as the primary suspect. The search for Eilander and his companion, who was also present at the scene, culminated around 9:30 p.m. that same evening. A tip led officers to a residence on St. Clair Avenue, where they found Eilander and the other individual in a garage. Eilander was taken into custody without incident. A search of the garage revealed a loaded handgun with ammunition that was consistent with a single. 45 Winchester shell casing found at the crime scene, near Eilander's truck. The other person who had been at the scene was detained, questioned, and ultimately released.
Jake Eilander was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Ulises Rangel. In an interview with law enforcement, Eilander's girlfriend stated that an unknown male, identified as Rangel, had approached them in the parking lot and became verbally abusive, leading to a heated argument with Eilander. She claimed that Eilander told her to get away, and then she heard a gunshot. She did not see a weapon on Rangel. Eilander was booked into the Bonneville County Jail as the community grappled with the sudden and tragic loss of Ulises Michael Rangel.
